The State Park of Serra do Mar is one of the largest continuous areas left from the Atlantic Forest. Its richness in flora, fauna and traditional cultures - Indians and caiçaras (mixed natives) - make it a place to be preserved and cherished.
The Park was created in 1977 and classified as a protected area in 1985. The UNESCO, through its Man and Biosphere Program has considered the Atlantic Forest a Reserve of the Biosphere, which is then "an instrument for conservation that favors the discovery of solutions to such problems as the deforestation of tropical forests, desertification, atmospheric pollution, the greenhouse effect, etc." In 1979 the Nucleus Picinguaba was incorporated into the original area of the Park. This Nucleus located in Ubatuba, next to the border of the State of Rio de Janeiro, close to Paraty, is the only one which reaches down to sea level, with a landscape of coastline, beaches, as well as steep ascending topography. Fortunately, the difficulty of access by land until the 70s (when the highway was inaugurated) has preserved a great deal of the forest and the rich culture of the natives of the region, characterized by a complete integration with nature. However, from the 80s on we have noticed an increase in deforestation, a de-characterization of the lifestyle of the natives and a growing social tension. Within this context the Nucleus Picinguaba has the function of promoting the preservation of the forest, and stimulating the integration of the different sectors of the population : fishermen, Indians, researchers and tourists.
