Carnival in Paraty

Carnival in Paraty

The historic city of Paraty celebrates the street carnival, as it was made in the old days.
Everyday, at every moment, it is possible to see big dolls, with masks and costumes and all kinds of lively people playing in the streets. As a matter of fact, this is Paraty´s street carnival spirit: a lot of street games, in a free and relaxed way.

Paraty is only joy before, during and after carnival. During February, the city already offers a complete show agenda, that ends up with the traditional “Carnamar”.

“Carnamar” is a competition among previously registered vessels where schooners will compete for the awarding criteria of the most garnished and the most lively. “Baleeiras” (a type of livesaving boat) and fishing boats will compete only for the set of awards that will be the most garnished and most lively.

Paraty counts currently with many carnival blocks: “Os Paulos”, “Vamos Que Tô”, “Os Meninos do Pontal”, “Paraty do Amanhã”, “Acadêmicos da Patitiba”, that parade and amuse at the Historic Center ang at “Avenida Roberto Silveira” (“Roberto Silveira Avenue”).

However, the most famous of them is the “Bloco da Lama” (“Mud Block”). Its originality and weirdness has been attracting the media and the public´s curiosity. Created in a carnival´s Saturday, over 21 years ago, by a group of friends that were bathing in the medicinal mud of “Praia do Jabaquara” (“Jabaquara´s Beach”) and, after noticing that they were irrecognizable, decided to play carnival without being recognized. On the following year, a larger group gathered and went out in a block on a carnival´Saturday, representing a prehistoric tribe: muddy from head to toes, covered in rags, carrying skulls, lianas and bones and yelling uga, uga, rá, rá! The “Mud Block” has gathered a larger number of members year after year and its passage on carnival´s Saturday is said to have the function of repelling bad spirits and attracting joy to Paraty´s Carnival.

Famous worlwide, Paraty´s Carnival attracts a very lively public every year. These are merrymakers from several regions of Brazil and abroad that are seeking in the little historic town a lot of animation during the 4 days of the event. In addition to the blocks, the carnival will have the participation of a “momo king”, Santa Cecília band and a matinee in the tent set at “Praça da Matriz”.
