New Year's Eve in Paraty

New Year's Eve in Paraty

CHRISTMAS
Chritsmas in Paraty is an invitation to party, to fraternization and to joy, without losing the universal characteristic of love and peace. The city is always decorated with lights and flowers to celebrate this special party and also to welcome, warmly and lively, tourists that arrive to spend their holidays in Paraty.

KINGS´ MERRYMAKING
Kings´ Merrymaking is a Portuguese tradition, brought to Brazil by colonizers. It is a group of musicians and singers that, always at night, visit houses and narrate the birth of Jesus in chants, singing glories to Him. Merrymaking in Paraty is formed by a viola, a guitar, a “cavaquinho”, a tambourine, a deaf box and a triangle. It has a master, a counter master and a “tripe” (a teenage girl or woman that sings in falsetto). Just like in Açores, the merrymakers don´t wear special costumes, but they always carry a special stardard or flag that identifies them. They only perform at night, to continue the East tradition of the Three Kings, that traveled at night following the “Guiding Star” to the city of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.
Traditionally, the house that is visited should have its lights off, its doors and windows closed, as if the residents were already sleeping. The chants start at the door of the house and they ask for the door to be opened so they can sing the birth of Jesus Boy.
After the singing, the residents offered candies, french toast, wine and other delicious food to the merrymakers and, sometimes, they offered them some money. After that, the merrymakers would go visit other houses.

NEW YEAR`S EVE
The New Year is celebrated by people from Paraty in a very special way. New year´s eve is considered to be the third important event in town´s touristic calendar, just losing for “Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty - Flip” (“Paraty´s International Literary Party”) and Carnival.
Hundreds of people - almost all of them dressed in white - gather themselves in a perfect scenario like “Praia do Pontal” (“Pontal´s Beach”) to reverence the year that ends and cheer the new year that begins in complete harmony, peace and safety.
The gathering in the Beach dates back to the beginning of the XX century. The New Year is also celebrated in other beaches of the county. Some islands in Paraty Bay also usually promote private events with attractions that assure a new year´s eve full of animation. Several options are offered to those who intend to visit the city and spend an unforgettable new year´s eve. In the sky, there´s the most spectacular fireworks, scheduled for midnight. On the sand, as well as in the sea, devoted people make offers to Iemanjá, the queen of the waters. The New Year arrives and hopes are renewed, creating a magical, unforgettable and emotional moment. This moment is just like Paraty.
